The pomelo has been largely forgotten about in, Americans oddly preferring the bitter grapefruit, which is in fact a hybrid of the pomelo and sweet orange. In fact, tangelos, mandelos and even possibly oranges are crossbreeds of this majestic fruit, popular across southeastern asia.
The pomelo usually has green skin, a thick inedible white rind, and flesh varying from pink to white. The taste is wonderful, lacking the sweetness that marks other citrus fruits, and only mildly bitter, unlike the grapefuit. Surely, the next time you see one of these pass through an upscale market, grab it, and try it out. You'll be happy you did.
